County to hold hearings on proposed tax rate

Limestone County residents will have the opportunity to express their opinion on the proposed tax rate increase at two hearings – Monday, Sept. 9, and Thursday, Sept. 12, both at 10 a.m. in the county courtroom of the Courthouse, in Groesbeck.

The court has proposed raising the tax rate from last year’s $0.5535 percent per $100 valuation to $0.6220 percent to fund its proposed budget for fiscal year 2013-14, which begins Oct. 1 and includes a 3 percent across-the board salary increase for county workers, the first in three years.

The reason given for the tax increase is mainly the decrease in revenues generated by a drop in valuation of the NRG Energy power plant and also the decrease in mineral and other industrial and utility property values.
