Katie Looney and Ashley Anderson helped serve up a two set, match win for the Wortham Lady Bulldogs last Saturday at the Centerville Volleyball Tournament against Diboll, 25-19, 25-15. The team had a lot of help at the net from kill leaders Elisha Libhart and Kierra Busby in the match as well.
The next matchup highlighted both present Wortham head volleyball coach, Johnny Ward, and his wife, Lori, who coached the team last year and is now coaching No. 20 Centerville team.
Wortham won a very close first set, 25-23, but fell in the final two sets 12-25, 17-25.
“We played well in the match and were proud to get a game on them,” said Ward. “Although we felt like we should have beaten them.”
Anderson led the team in serves during the match. Hannah McCord and Busby led the kill brigade.
The match took its toll on front line player Libhart, who sustained a deep knee bruise during the game.
JV players Kate Vogel and Brooke Salisbury were called in to help out the rest of the tournament with Libhart out.
Wortham ended the tournament playing in the consolation game, falling to the Magnolia West High School JV in three sets, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22.
Kendle Rhodes and Sara Sessions led the team in serves.
Wortham is now 13-8 on the season with one more non-district game left (Waco La Vega Sept. 10) before district play begins on Friday, Sept. 13 against Cayuga.
