Numbers, size cost Ladycats in Tuesday’s home opener

By Mike Eddleman

The recipe for success the Mexia Ladycats used to claim a state title last spring is missing a few ingredients early on this season, creating some challenges as they begin a new championship run.

Mexia fell 59-51 in its home opener to Waco University, unable to use its signature speed and pressure to counter the opposition’s size inside.

“We were undermanned with injuries and players out tonight, but our girls played hard and played well to stay in the game,” said coach Randy Barger. “We wanted to stay with them and have a chance late in the game and we did that.”

The Ladycats did put a scare in the University squad in the second half after playing from behind throughout the first half. Mexia trailed by as many as 12 in the first half, cutting into the lead with short runs, but watching the gap widen again as the visitors’ size inside gave them a distinct edge on the boards.
