Kerens – It was the kind of game one would expect from two fast-paced basketball programs, running full speed up and down the court, stellar defense and typically average scoring in similar cases.
But Tuesday night was somewhat of an exception for Class 1A Kerens and Class 3A Mexia, both going by the mascot “Lady Cats,” with the latter finding themselves on the opposite end of an 81-39 defeat.
Last season the scenario was different, although the score was a little closer (61-52 in favor of Mexia) In that game and as we know Mexia went on to become 3A state champion in Texas girls basketball, while Kerens finished their year as regional quarterfinalist.
No, Tuesday night was not the kind of game you want to see from a defending state champion but, in Mexia’s defense, they are in a transition mode – rebuilding maybe – and have been plagued with the injury bug, losing 2013 state tournament MVP Tee Owens the first part of this season; and Bre Stoner has struggled somewhat, but seems to be regaining her footing after coming off an injury just a few weeks back.
