Girls outlast Groesbeck in district opener

By Mike Eddleman

The old saying goes, “the best offense is a good defense.” If the phrase has ever been true it was Friday night when the Ladycats held off Groesbeck in their district opener for 45-41 victory.

Mexia coach Randy Barger admitted the offense was not there Friday, and the team would have to improve on its free throw shooting down the stretch, but he was pleased with his team.

“We’re a defensive team and that’s where we’re going to have success,” he said. “This may be one of the most important games for us. They are improving and our mentality was we couldn’t lose this game.”

They couldn’t and they didn’t, making up for offensive struggles by keeping the pressure on all night by forcing more turnovers – 42 – than points allowed and keeping pace on the boards against the much taller Groesbeck squad. Mexia was out-rebounded 33 to 26, but it was enough to keep the edge.
