Jan. 1 was memorable for 17-year-old Andre’ya Fleming, of Mexia, not so much because of the new year but because of what she did that day: she performed in the Capital One Bowl halftime show in Orlando along with hundreds of other talented teenagers.

The previous summer, the Mexia High School junior, who plays clarinet in the band and is its color guard captain, attended All American Camp in Brownwood, where she was selected to take part with her flags in the Capital One Bowl halftime show.

Those chosen for the show would have to pay their own way, but not surprisingly, her mother, Yvette Forge, helped and they made plans for the event.

The two left Mexia Dec. 28, and flew to Orlando, enjoying side trips to Disney World and Universal Studios while they were there.
