U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Joshua Smith, who has been serving in Kuwait on his third active duty deployment, surprised his 5-year-old son Nathan when he showed up at Coolidge Elementary School Wednesday.
A 2004 Coolidge High School graduate, Smith was scheduled for 15 days of leave in the United States. He had told the school that he would be arriving Feb. 12, and arranged to surprise his son on Nathan’s lunch break.
The plan was almost ruined when Smith, who had arrived first in Atlanta, couldn’t get a flight to Dallas after so many were canceled because of severe weather. Smith, however, did not let that obstacle stop him – he drove all night to get to the school.
