A 21-year-old man was killed Thursday in a single-vehicle wreck just outside of Mexia.
According to Waco Department of Public Safety trooper D.L. Wilson, the accident occurred at 4:55 p.m. May 29 about 1.3 miles south of the Mexia city limits on FM 39.
Javier Perales of Coolidge was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport SUV towards Mexia when the accident happened. Witnesses told the DPS that Perales was traveling at a high rate of speed when he entered a curve in the road and lost control of his vehicle.
The SUV drove well into the shallow roadside ditch at least once, and rolled at least three times, Wilson said.
It came to rest upside down between the ditch and northbound lane of FM 39. Debris from both the inside and outside of the Ford was scattered for at least 50 yards across both lanes of the road, and a single tire from the front of the SUV stopped, upright, in the northbound lane.
Perales was pronounced dead at the scene by Limestone County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Marcus Ray Hanna.
He was wearing his seatbelt.
