Two former Limestone County residents now in the armed forces were present in spirit at Mexia’s Firecracker 5K Run last Friday, though physically they were respectively hundreds and thousands of miles away.
Kenda Eckols, of Kosse, ran the 5K in honor of her daughter, Air Force 2nd Lt. Taylin Eckols, 24, stationed in Columbus, Miss., and her son, Marine Lance Cpl. Janzen Eckols, 21, stationed in Kuwait.
“They are in different areas of the world,” Kenda Eckols said. “I wanted to run in honor of them.”
Taylin graduated from Groesbeck High School in 2008 and earned her BBS in kinesiology from The University of Texas-Tyler in 2012.
Janzen joined the Marines in August 2012, right after his graduation from Groesbeck High.
Attending her brother’s bootcamp graduation deeply affected Taylin Eckols, her mother said.
