A Funeral Mass for Maria Ruiz will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, at noon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mexia. Father Justin Nguyen will officiate. Interment will follow the services at Mexia Cemetery.
Visitation was on Sunday, Feb. 12 from 3-9 p.m. at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague and a Rosary service was held on Monday at 7 p.m. at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague.
Mrs. Ruiz passed away on Friday, Feb. 10 at her residence in Mexia.
She was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to Ascension and Bertha Hernandez on Oct. 6, 1985. She moved to Texas in 1993 and graduated from Teague High School with the class of 2005. After high school, Maria enlisted in the U. S. Army. She proudly served two tours of duty in Iraq in both the infantry and in supplies. Her favorite song was “American Soldier” by Toby Keith and she was able to see him perform in Iraq on a U.S.O. tour. She married Velino Ruiz on Dec. 12, 2008, and shared over eight years of marriage together. After her service, she attended Navarro College school of Nursing and became a registered nurse. She worked as a nurse for Providence Health Center in Waco. Maria had a passion for roses, was a true animal lover with a big heart and enjoyed drawing. She was a member of the Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Velino Ruiz of Mexia; her parents, Ascenion & Bertha Hernandez of Teague; five brothers, Mateo Hernandez and wife Elizabeth of Teague, Nemorio Hernandez and wife Rocio of Ada, Okla., Regino Hernandez and wife Martha of Teague, Leo Hernandez and Frankie Nicole of Baton Rouge, La., and Manuel Hernandez of Teague; one sister, Lupe Hernandez of Teague; nieces and nephews, Frey, Luis, Lucero, Sonia, Abril, Giselle, and Jayleen; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jose Guadalupe and Elena Rivera Ruiz; her brother-in-law, Jose Guadalupe Ruiz, Jr.; other relatives and friends.
