Rivera Regional champion, new record holder

Mexia News Staff Report

Diego Rivera obliterated his way through the 123-weight class this past weekend at the Region II Division II Championship, held in Smithville.
Rivera – who has brought home gold medals all season for the Mexia Blackcats powerlifting team – now owns the regional record in the squat (430 lbs.), which he set back on Feb. 4 at the Rusk Invitational. On Saturday, he added another regional record to his trophy case, benching a total of 245 lbs. Rivera wasn’t quite through, though, as he broke that mark on his final attempt, pushing the bar up with 255 lbs. In the Deadlift, he settled on his lift of 405 lbs., however, he attempted 430 lbs. on one of his lifts.
For the meet, he lifted a combined total of 1,090 lbs., just 30 lbs. shy up tying the regional record of 1,120 lbs. set in 2000.
