With the final playoff spot in District 18-4A on the line Friday afternoon, the Mexia Blackcats were looking to repeat their March 28 performance against district rival Fairfield.
In that game, the Blackcats walked away with a 13-3 road win over the Eagles. It also marked the last district win for Mexia.
However, in Friday’s game, things didn’t go quite as well as anticipated for the home team Blackcats as Fairfield (4-18, 1-5) took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second and held off the fighting Blackcats to end up with a 4-2 win, forcing a tie for the No. 4 playoff seed.
