Altus Carter, Sr.

The angelic hosts came for Altus Carter, Sr. on Thursday, May 18, 2017 in the Temple V.A. Hospital among loving family and devoted friends.
Viewing was held from 6-8 p.m., Friday, May 26 in the Moore’s Angelic Furneral Chapel. Funeral service wwill be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 27 in the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church, 311 N. Baker Street, Mexia with the pastor, Rev. Byron Ravnell officiating, and Rev. Kevin VanHook as Eulogist. Interment will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, 1618 W. Hwy 84, Mexia.
Carter was born in the Rocky Branch Community of Wortham to Olester and Iola Carter. He grew up in Freestone County and the family later moved to Limestone County. He graduated from Mexia’s  Dunbar High School and served a tour of duty with the U.S. Army from which he received an honorable discharge. Carter married Sue Jernigan upon his discharge from the Army and later married Luetta Smith. He was employed at the Mexia State School, was a faithful member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the United Brotherhood. 
He is survived by three sons: Arnold Carter (Judy), Altus Carter, Jr. (Sandra) and Charles Carter, all of Mexia; three daughters:  Ginger Christian (Alvin) Odessa; Linda Carter, Tyler; and Charlotte Gilliam, Dallas; two sisters: Mardestine Williams (Walter) Mexia; and Barbara Moore, Dallas; special nephew: Sydney Wayne Carter (Melba) Mexia; his wife: Evelyn Crawford, Streetman; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
