After winning their opening match of the season Tuesday at home, the Mexia Ladycats looked to make a big impact at the Fairfield Invitational Volleyball Tournament that began play on Thursday.
Unfortunately, for the crimson and black, they opened the tournament against the Class 2A defending state champion, Iola Lady Bulldogs.
With the scored tied at 4-4 early in the match, Iola went on an 8-0 run until Baileah Thompson’s push shot landed on the floor in the Lady Bulldogs side of the net to stop it.
Down 22-14, Mexia cut the Iola lead to seven when Wayneshia Daily’s backcourt hit grazed the net and fell in for the point to make the score 22-15. Libero Destini Hutchison and Jenny Vu played great defense on the play to keep the ball alive on the Ladycats side of the net.
