School supply giveaway sees hundreds equipped

Mexia’s school supply giveaway Saturday grew well beyond last year’s efforts, with more than 400 students served.
The event was produced by a coalition of Mexia area businesses, churches and organizations called Mexia Cares that each donated 400 of one or sometimes two items from a list of school supplies requested by the Mexia Independent School District for students in pre-k through sixth grade.
Jason Ellis, a teacher and local pastor, chaired the giveaway and reported a significant increase from last year in the number of students helped.
“We had 400 backpacks we gave away,” Ellis said, “and we began to send students home with just some school supplies in some of the boxes we had sitting around. By 10:30 we had given away 400 backpacks. Last year we sent about 110 or so backpacks to McBay and Sims, so that was the plan this year if we had any left over, but we didn’t have any left over. So it was incredible; it definitely grew from last year.”
