The Mexia Blackcats got their first taste of live action Friday night as they hosted the Palestine Wildcats in their first scrimmage of the 2017 season.
The freshmen Blackcats looked impressive, scoring a couple of touchdowns and winning their battle. Coach Jimmy Woolard was pretty fired up with their performance and liked what he saw out on the field.
The junior varsity team struggled offensively and were hit hard by the bigger Palestine defenders, but the kids never gave up and got right back in there to keep battling.
Mexia’s first string looks pretty good and the offense managed to move the ball some. Quarterback Travion Carter connected with receivers on a couple of good passes down field and Jadrian Smith showed some spark in the Blackcats running game. Defensively, there are still a few kinks that need to be worked out.
