Friday night’s home opener for the Mexia Blackcats turned out to be a wild fight to the finish, however, it would be the Teague Lions coming out the winner in overtime, 40-33.
Mexia faced a fourth and 13 from the 28-yard line on their overtime possession, but quarterback Travion Carter’s pass to the near side line fell incomplete, thus ending the game.
After Mexia scored on a 14-yard run by running back Jadrian Smith with 3:35 left in the game, Teague managed to use up the clock, putting together a drive down to the Blackcat’s one-yard line.
With less than 00:35 to play, the Lions looked as if they made it in, but the ball came loose and both teams piled onto the ball.
After the referees were able to clear the pile, Teague’s Fred Harper came up with the ball just inside the goal line, allowing the Lions to tie the game at 33-33.
