Mexia tennis teams step up their game

The Mexia Blackcats tennis team continues to improve each week.
The team finished 2-17 the week before last, but came back home last Thursday to give the Athens Hornets a run for their money.
In boy’s doubles, Mexia’s Timothy Boulware and Eric Le played a tough match against Athens’ Carson Adair and Colten Evans. The Hornets ended up the winners, 6-4, 6-3.
In girl’s doubles, Aileen Medina and Jessica Gonzalez teamed up to defeat the Hornets Marcia Garcia and Natalie Harrell in two sets, 6-2, 6-3, and doubles partners Dilyn Busby and Karla Fuentes crushed Athens’ doubles duo, Haley Hoffman and Elena Salido in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
In mixed doubles, Abisai Canizales and Dyanne Velazquez put up a fight against the Hornets Evan Ellis and Michelle Bywaters before falling in two sets, 2-6, 2-6.
Mexia’s girls went 5-1 in singles play against Athens.
Aileen Medina defeated Bywaters, 6-3, 6-4; Gonzalez won over Harrell, 6-0, 6-1; Velazquez beat Garcia, 6-2, 6-2; Nyvea Livingston defeated Brenda Arenas, 9-7 and Madison Rodriguez crushed Carmen Medina, 8-0.
Mexia travels to Madisonville for their match today, starting at 4 p.m.
