What better way to pick up the first win of the season, other than beating your longtime rival for the 61st time in 84 meetings!
That’s exactly what the Mexia Blackcats did as they defeated their neighbor from across the Navasota River, Groesbeck, in the 84th Battle of the River game, 36-8, played Friday night at Black Cat Field.
Mexia led 15-8 going into the fourth quarter, then added some insurance when running back Josh Beachum carried the ball up the middle for a one-yard touchdown run. Kicker Lalo Ortiz added the extra-point to put the Blackcats up by 14 with 10:53 remaining in the game.
Smith scored his third touchdown of the game on a five-yard run with 8:02 remaining to play in the game, giving Mexia the 21-point advantage.
