Emma Lewis, a 17-year-old home-schooled senior from Limestone County, traveled to the Texas panhandle town of Cactus on a one-week mission trip to help refugees who have settled there.
Emma spoke to the Mexia Lions Club about that trip, which she took in July, and her plans to return to Cactus to provide additional help.
Emma was part of a team of six adults and 12 high school-aged youth from an Oklahoma church.
Cactus covers only two square miles and has a population of about 4,000 people. English is just one of many languages spoken there.
The town represents nearly 20 different ethnicities and nationalities: Somalia, South Sudan, Eritrea, Kenya, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba and Brazil, among others.
