Most Distinguished Alumnus Philip Wayne Shoemaker
Highly intelligent and capable of significant academic prowess, Mexia High School’s 2017 Distinguished Alumnus Philip Wayne Shoemaker, from the Mexia Ex- Students’ Association’s Class of 1967, admits that he seldom studied in school.
Fellow Blackcats in Shoemaker’s chemistry and physics classes often perceived him as advanced in knowledge and awareness of the subject matter, but his grades did not reflect those characteristics. His teachers often encouraged him to strive to be more involved with his pursuit of academic learning. Shoemaker, however, says that he had little direction from home about what he should do with his life, but Mexia High teachers like Ed Kidd, Edmund Schuster, Dale Brown, W. N. Stone, Coach McQueen and others attempted to advise him that preparation for his adventure in life began in high school. Nevertheless, he did not push himself to be all that he could be.
