District 9-4A DII preview

We are in the “bye” week for District 9-4A DII, which means Mexia, Lorena, Salado, Fairfield, Waco Connally and Robinson are resting up and getting ready for district play on Oct. 13.
It’s been a little surprising this season as the non-district schedule has wrapped up.
Salado sits at 5-0 going into district competition, followed by three teams at 2-3 (Mexia, Fairfield and Robinson), and two teams at 1-4 (Waco Connally and Lorena).
The Mexia Blackcats are starting to gain momentum, especially with last Friday night’s convincing win over the Caldwell Hornets, 35-12.
The team underwent coaching changes during the offseason, as Frank Sandoval was named athletic director/head football coach back in April. Sandoval brought in a host of assistant coaches, keeping a few from last year’s staff. The new regime has got the city excited more than ever this season about Blackcat football, and the players have responded well after a shaky start by winning two of their last three ball games.
