The inside of Blackcat gym was filled with neon pink shirts Friday afternoon, in honor of October’s cancer awareness month, as Mexia hosted and swept the Athens Lady Hornets, 25-19, 25-12, 25-7, in district play.
The Ladycats started out slow in the match, allowing Athens to stay neck-in-neck throughout most of the first set.
With the score tied at 16-16, Mexia’s Keiana Keith found the kill zone with a blast of a shot that gave the Ladycats a one-point advantage. De’Modesty Williams served up an ace afterwards to give the team a little cushion and putting the score at 18-16.
Two great plays by Baileah Hutchison and Tiesha Jones, both “diving to the floor for digs” helped keep the ball alive and eventually the point, giving Mexia a 20-17 advantage.
Precious Daily set up the ball for Camrye Smith’s kill to close out the set with the six-point win.
