The Mexia Blackcats spotted the Lorena Leopards 10 points through the first three quarters of play Friday night in the district opener for both teams, but the crimson and black kicked it in gear in the fourth quarter to score twice on Jadrian Smith’s two touchdown runs and a swing gate TD run by Josh Beachum to escape with the 20-10 win to start conference play at 1-0.
Smith’s first touchdown was set up on a nice swing pass from quarterback Travion Carter to the near side of the field. Smith shot down the sideline after teammate Beachum laid out a Lorena defender and made it inside the Leopards red zone. Smith capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown and after Lalo Ortiz made the extra-point, the Blackcats were within three of Lorena.
Mexia’s defense held and forced Lorena to punt the ball away. The Blackcats ended up with good field position. A few plays later, Carter scooted 25 yards on the keeper and was finally taken down at the Leopard five. A couple of plays later, Smith scored his second touchdown of the game, but the extra-point kick went wide-left, however, the Blackcats took the lead, 13-10.
