Parts of Blackcat Stadium will have a new look in 2018. The Mexia Independent School District Board of Trustees have voted to move forward with the construction with a new fieldhouse and renovate the existing one.
The new construction will cost an estimated $2,949,706 and renovations will be $246,841. The total cost is an estimated $3,196,547.
This project will be funding by the existed bond monies approved by voters in 2015.
“The new structure will include a new home side concession stand and bathrooms,” said MISD Superintendent Lyle DuBus. “The new fieldhouse will include a classroom, home ticket booth, coaches offices, and locker rooms. The renovated space changes the old configuration to include a locker room for girl’s sports, an updated training area and a visitor’s ticket booth.”
Construction is scheduled to begin immediately upon completion of the 2017 Mexia football season.
“It’s been a long process,” said MISD board president Benjie Reed. “It was one of the things that were in the bond issue. If anyone has been in those facilities, they’re in really poor condition. We were advised by the contractors that it (the fieldhouse) will be available to us on August the first in 2018. We had to go ahead and make a decision because with the increase in anticipated cost of materials because of the hurricane, we needed to go ahead and do that.”
