Talk about some high intensity excitement last week in Texas High School Football, especially on the local level, after the Mexia Blackcats spotted the Lorena Leopards (no pun intended) 10 points through the first three quarters, then erupted for 20 in the fourth to pick up the district opening win on the road. Fairfield took the Salado Eagles into overtime to start district play at 1-0, with a wild 42-35 shootout win, the Teague Lions mauled the Elkhart Elks, 44-7, and the Groesbeck Goats put up 50 points on the scoreboard as their defense shutout the Palestine Westwood Wildcats.
Back home, the Blackcats never looked tired whatsoever during Friday night’s game. In fact, they looked even stronger in the second half, eventually wearing the Leopards down. Coach Sandoval and crew showed a little trickery with a swinging gate touchdown that caught Lorena completely off guard and Mexia’s run game picked up tremendously the more the game went on.
