Monday evening’s bi-district volleyball playoff game was the final match of the season for the Mexia Ladycats, as they fell to District 17-4A’s No. 3 seed team China Spring in four sets, 20-25, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25.
Mexia kept it close in the first set, trailing by only one, 10-11, until China Spring put together a 9-3 run to go up 20-13. Tiesha Jones kill put an end to the Lady Cougars scoring and Wayneshia Daily served up three points and a kill to help pull the Ladycats within three. Precious Daily’s ace-serve made it a 20-22 game, but hitting errors helped the Lady Cougars gain the final three points and the first set win.
The second set was an unbelievable display of two teams laying everything on the line to win. Long volleys, diving saves, and all around great play by both teams kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The set included nine lead changes and eventually the Lady Cougars moved ahead by one late and led 23-20 towards the end. Mexia scored the next two points to move to within one, but China Spring scored the next two for the win and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
