Yellowjackets secure district title: Coolidge breaks Panther’s grip

The Coolidge Yellowjackets finally broke the spell the Abbott Panthers held for the past 12 meetings between the two teams, as the black and gold came back home with the 71-24 fourth quarter, mercy-rule win Friday night on the road.
The last time Coolidge beat the Panthers was a 46-0 shutout in 2001.
As predicted, the game was close … in the first quarter, that is, with the score in favor of the Yellowjackets, 20-16, after two touchdowns by Torrey Hoover and one by Jordan Brown.
The rest of last Thursday’s Friday Previews read: “However, the Yellowjackets could end up with an explosive win.”
Explosive?! That was an understatement.
It was more of a dynamic display of the offensive capabilities this team has produced throughout the season, as Coolidge outperformed and outscored Abbott through the next three quarters, 51-8.
