Friday at the Yellow Jacket Athletic Complex, Coolidge stayed undefeated in District play by winning over the Penelope Wolverines 54-8. The Yellowjackets finished 4-0 in district and are 8-2 overall, heading into the playoffs this weekend.
The Yellowjackets will play the Avalon Eagles (7-3) Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Axtell for their opening playoff game. Coolidge Coach Wayne Ware has seen his team improve every week as they head to the playoff with a full head of steam.
The win over Penelope showcased the combination of Torry Hoover passing to Roman Benjamin and the stifling defense of Coolidge. Benjamin caught five touchdown passes and the defense only let down once against a good Wolverine offense.
The Yellowjackets scored on their first possession with Hoover delivering a perfect pass to Benjamin and Juan “J.J.” Acevedo added the two-point kick to give Coolidge an 8-0 lead. Senior Manuel Rivera was rewarded for his hard work all year with 26-yard TD reception. The lone score for Penelope came on a 43-yard TD run by Brenner Martin and a successful conversion kick by Osbaldo Rodriquez. The Yellowjackets Jordan Brown ended the first half scoring with a 48-yard kickoff return. The score at the half was, 48-8, Coolidge.
