The Mexia Blackcats exploded for 31 points in the first half of Friday night’s final district game of the 2017 season against the Robinson Rockets, enroute to a crushing 52-19 win.
With the win, Mexia makes it back into the playoffs after missing out last year and will be the No. 2 seed from District 9-4A Division II after Lorena defeated Fairfield, 24-21, and Salado beat Waco Connally, 41-7. That put Mexia, Lorena and Fairfield in a three-way tie for second, but since the Blackcats have wins over both other two teams that gave the Blackcats the advantage.
In Friday’s win, the Blackcats struck quickly with 21 points in the first quarter.
After a big kickoff return by Davion Carter to start the game, Mexia drove down to the Robinson three-yard line, where running back Jadrian Smith took the ball in from there. After a Lalo Ortiz extra-point, the Blackcats led 7-0 with 11:11 on the clock.
Good things come to those who wait and, are in just the right spot, as Blackcat linebacker Dre’Vaun Cooper came up with a fumble recovery after teammate Jadrian Ardister cause Robinson quarterback Mason Cooper to cough the ball up at his own 23-yard line. Mexia’s Cooper wound up returning the ball all the way for the Blackcat’s second touchdown of the game with 2:38 still to play in the opening quarter.
Cooper wasn’t finished picking up fumbles.
