Wortham falls to Overton in football district finale

Mexia News Staff Report

Despite Bulldog running back Stephon Ester’s record breaking performance in Friday night’s game with the Overton Mustangs, it didn’t turn out to be the happy ending Wortham was expecting in the district finale. Overton ended up getting the win, 54-26.
Ester set a school record for carries in a game with 40 and the score record for single game rushing yards with 334. He also scored all four touchdowns for the Bulldogs in the game.
Defensively, Logan Salisbury made a fumble recovery.
Turnovers were key factors in the loss for the Bulldogs, fumbling four times and losing three of them, along with an interception, while Overton fumbled twice, losing one. However, the Mustangs were flagged 16 times for a loss of 140 yards, while Wortham was penalized only seven times for 50 yards.
Total offensive yards were fairly even with the Bulldogs gaining a total of 343 to Overton’s 359.
Defensively, Braxton Whaley, Michael McGlone and Brandon Coker finished the game with 10 total tackles each.
Wortham ends up 4-6 on the season and 0-5 in district play.
