It was shaky at first, especially dealing with the Grandview Lady Zebras 2-2-1 half court trapping defense, but the Mexia Ladycats managed to break open a tightly contested basketball season opener at home late in the game to get the 61-51 win.
At the start of the fourth period in Tuesday night’s game, both teams were tied 43-43. Mexia took a two-point lead on J’Myia Strain’s basket underneath.
After a Grandview timeout, Oasis Keener - leading scorer on the night for the Ladycats with 20 - hit a two-point shot in the paint to stretch Mexia’s lead to four, 47-43.
Lady Zebra Hanna Hudson was fouled on the next play. She hit both free throws to cut the Ladycats lead down to two.
The two teams traded baskets after that until Keener popped in another tough shot for two and ended up getting fouled on the play as well. Keener sank the “And 1” shot to push the Ladycats back up by three, 50-47.
