Coolidge head coach Wayne Ware knew that if his team could get up on Avalon early, they’d have a good chance at winning Friday night’s bi-district football playoff game.
The No. 10 ranked Yellowjackets (9-2) did just that and a roller coaster of a second half later, Coolidge emerged with an 89-63 win over the Eagles to advance to the Class 1A Region IV regional round against No. 6 ranked Gilmer Union Hill (10-0) this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Mineola’s Meredith Memorial Stadium.
“We knew it was going to be a hard-fought ball game and put points on the board,” Ware stated. “We still had some jitters, but once we settled in, our defense started clicking and after we got on top we matched them score-for-score.”
Coolidge scored first with Torrey Hoover taking the ball in from 37 yards out, followed by Juan “J.J.” Acevedo’s two-point kick for the point-after to give the Yellowjackets an early 8-0 lead.
