Mexia DPS Trooper shot, killed

A Mexia DPS trooper based in Freestone County was shot and killed during a traffic stop on I-45 on Thanksgiving Day.
According to DPS Public Information Officer Lt. Jason Reyes, Trooper Damon Allen had pulled over a driver for a traffic violation just south of Fairfield, at mile marker 194 about 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 23, when the driver opened fire on Allen, killing him at the scene.
The driver, identified as Debrett Black, 31, of Lindale, fled in a 2012 gray Chevrolet Malibu.
DPS issued warnings to citizens to be on the lookout for the Malibu and for Black.
Law enforcement officers from other counties descended on the area, looking for Black and his vehicle in Limestone, Freestone and other nearby counties.
Finally, law enforcement officers in Waller County spotted Black’s Malibu.
DPS reported that gunfire was exchanged between the Waller County Sheriff’s Office personnel and Black, and ultimately the suspect was arrested.
Trooper Allen had been with the Highway Patrol for 15 years. He leaves behind a wife and three children. He lived in Mexia and was a Mexia High School graduate.
Gov. Greg Abbot issued a statement, “With heavy hearts on this Thanksgiving,” Abbott said, “Cecilia and I express our most sincere condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the Trooper who was callously killed today in the line of duty … I ask that all of Texas keep this Trooper and his brothers and sisters in blue in their thoughts and prayers. The killer will face justice, and the State of Texas will continue to offer our unwavering support for the men and women in law enforcement who keep our communities safe.”
