The Coolidge Yellowjackets played one of their toughest basketball games this season, facing the Abbott Panthers on the road Tuesday night, Jan.9, in district play.
According to coach Wayne Ware, the Yellowjackets trailed the entire game, but managed to tie it in the fourth at 30-30 before finally gaining the lead and escaping Abbott with the 38-34 win.
The game started out as a defensive battle with the Panthers holding Coolidge to only three points in the first period of play, while scoring 10 of their own. The offensive pace picked up a little in the second period for the Yellowjackets, outscoring Abbott, 11-9, as Torrey Hoover scored 10 points in the quarter for Coolidge, but they still trailed at halftime, 19-14.
Both teams put up nine points each on the scoreboard in the third, with Abbott still maintaining a five-point lead at 28-23.
Hoover went on a scoring binge in the fourth, scoring seven and was joined by teammate Jordan Brown, who dished in seven as well, helping the Yellowjackets turn things around for the win.
Hoover finished the game with 21 points, Brown had nine, Roman Benjamin chipped in six and Manny Rivera added a two-point basket.
