The Mexia Ladycats overcame an early first-quarter deficit and overpowered the Waco La Vega Lady Pirates the rest of the way for a 46-31 non-district win, putting their season record at 18-6 overall.
A quick six points by La Vega to start the game forced Mexia coach Randy Barger to call timeout and talk to his team with 5:41 remaining in the opening period.
La Vega scored again after the timeout to make it 8-0 until the Ladycats Destini Hutchison was fouled with 4:16 to go in the opening period and sent to the free throw line.
Hutchison finally got Mexia on the scoreboard, hitting one of two charity shots.
That must have sparked a fire under the Ladycats as their shooting started to hit the mark. Treece Daily pulled up at the top of the arc, sinking the three, then after another basket by La Vega, Hutchison and Tiesha Jones scored two pointers to pull Mexia to within two, 10-8.
Jazmine Green tied the game at 10 with 1:32 left in the first and Keiana Keith gave the Ladycats the lead 23 seconds later with a two-point bucket in the paint.
