The smell of leather and the clank of aluminum bats can be heard throughout diamonds across the state of Texas as the high school baseball season has officially begun.
The Mexia Blackcats hit the field for the first day of practice Friday, Feb. 2, but will be a little short-staffed until basketball season finishes up.
The year’s team will be coached by Evan Simpson, who takes over for Chad Coker, now the head coach for the Wortham Bulldogs.
Simpson was an assistant coach last season for the team. This year Simpson will have assistant coaches Justin Barnett and Jordan Heusinkveld on the staff.
The Blackcats finished the 2017 season 6-15 overall and 1-7 in District 18-4A.
Mexia lost some senior leadership, but still hasplenty of talent coming back to help some of the younger players moving up to the varsity team.
