Trailing by seven and despite a three-point basket by Mexia’s DeModesty Williams with 10 seconds to play in Tuesday night’s final district game of the season at home against the Madisonville Lady Mustangs, the Ladycats couldn’t quite pull out a win as they fell 46-42.
With the loss, Mexia drops to 23-7 overall and 6-2 in district play, ending the regular season in second place in District 18-4A after Fairfield came back to beat Palestine 39-34 at home Tuesday to take the district title.
Both Madisonville and Palestine advance to postseason play as well.
The Ladycats will play District 17-4A’s No. 3 seed, the Lorena Lady Leopards (19-11) at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at West High School.
In Tuesday’s game, Madisonville took an 8-7 lead after one and went up by nine in the second period, 20-11, before Mexia went on a 7-0 run to make it a two-point game entering the half at 20-18.
During the run, Williams made two steals back-to-back that lead to three points by teammate Yazmine Green. Williams then hit two free throws with 1:44 remaining in the second period to make it 20-16 Lady Mustangs.
