If breaking records were an art, then Mexia Blackcat powerlifter Diego Rivera would be the master.
This past weekend at the Class 4A Region II Division II regional championship in Smithville, Rivera not only captured first place in the 123-pound weight class, he set a new regional record by lifting a combined 1,125 pounds — replacing the old record of 1,120 pounds set in 2000.
In the process of setting the new combined-lift regional record, he also tied his record of 440 pounds in the squat, which he set in Normangee back on Feb. 17, and set a new mark in the bench press, breaking his record from last year of 245 pounds with Saturday’s bench of 260 pounds.
Rivera now holds all regional records except the deadlift.
