Mexia softball coach Keith Vest tells his players to be aggressive at the plate and come out swinging.
The Ladycats did just that Tuesday night against Madisonville and outslugged the Lady Mustangs, 11-9. The victory clinched the runner-up spot in District 18-4A and also avenged a 13-8 loss to Madisonville earlier in the season.
The victory put Mexia at 5-2 in district play. They played their final regular-season game Friday night at Fairfield, which had clinched the district championship and entered the finale with a 7-0 district slate. Third-place Athens has finished their district campaign with a 4-4 record.
“We’re very aggressive,” Vest said. “I tell them to hunt fastball early and just swing away at it, square it up.”
Jennifer Williams socked a pair of solo home runs and Tashundra Reeves belted a two-run homer to cap a five-run second inning that ignited the Ladycats.
