The Centex Rockets play an ambitious tournament schedule, especially during the spring and summer. And the Mexia-based AAU basketball team comprised of seventh- and eighth-graders usually competes well against competition from around the state.
The Rockets have won three tournaments this year, according to coach Denorris Sandles. One championship came while playing against high school junior varsity-level competition.
They won three games by an average of almost 16 points in a tourney in Mexia this past weekend.
Now, the Rockets have their sights set on two tournaments in July. They are slated to play July 5-8 in an AAU tournament in San Antonio. Then, they’ll travel July 25-29 to Atlanta for an AAU national tournament.
In addition to the seventh- and eighth-grade team, there is a team of fifth- and sixth-graders coached by Rodrick Greer. Their next tournament is June 23-24 in Bryant.
Sandles said the seventh- and eight-grade team goes to a national tournament every year. Last year they went to Las Vegas and won the championship.
