Hermine Hawker Sewell

Hermine Hawker Sewell, 75, of Mexia, passed away Dec. 22, 2013, in Mexia.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24, at the Greenwood Cemetery in Teague, with the Rev. Marcus Sheffield officiating.

Hermine was born Nov. 11, 1938, in Houston.

She was adopted, through the Edna Gladney Home, by Herman W. and Gladys Bell Hawker when she was 3 years old.
She was a graduate of Teague High School. She retired from Mexia ISD after many years of service as an office assistant. During those years, she impacted the lives of many students.

Hermine’s family was the joy of her life. However, her loving, caring ways were extended to everyone she knew.
She was a longtime member and past president of the Woman’s Friday Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother Marshall Muse.


Barbara Glynn Stokes

Barbara Glynn Stokes, 82, of Mexia, passed away Dec. 20, 2013, in Corsicana.

Fu­neral services were held Mon­­day, Dec. 23, at Blair-Stubbs Chapel, with the Rev. Rick Gray and the Rev. Michael King officiating.

Interment was in the Pattison Cemetery in Emhouse.

Barbara was born Nov. 13, 1931, in Beaumont, to Orvill Glynn and Sadie Faye Dunn Taylor.

She worked in the administrative office at Six Flags, the IRS, was a Realtor for Century 21 and retired from Texas Power and Light’s clerical department.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Barbara devoted her life to God and her family and friends.
She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Wayne Taylor.


Robert Earl Medlock Sr.

The angelic hosts came for Mr. Robert Earl Medlock Sr. on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at Mexia LTC in Mexia, surrounded by loving family and devoted friends.
A viewing will be held Saturday, Dec. 21, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Moore’s Angelic Funeral Home, 406 Monroe St. in Teague.
Funeral services will be Sunday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 203 N. Canton St. in Mexia, with Elder Tas Betts officiating. Interment will follow at Sandy Creek Cemetery in Coolidge.
Mr. Robert Earl Medlock Sr. was born in Coolidge on Nov. 19, 1946, to the parentage of Mr. George Medlock and Mrs. Verlene Gee Medlock. Mr. Medlock grew up in Coolidge and attended schools in Midlothian. He attended Taylor Chapel COGIC in Wortham and Salvation Lighthouse COGIC in Mexia, and he professed his belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.


Doris Helen Henderson

Funeral services for Ms. Doris Helen Henderson will be held Saturday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 203 N. Canton St. in Mexia.

Officiating will be the Rev. Claude Jackson, and the eulogist will be the Rev. Robert Campbell. Family and friends may visit Ms. Henderson as she slumbers in sweet repose at Pearly Gates Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 20, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Doris Helen “Baby” Henderson was born April 3, 1949, to the parentage of David Henderson and Fankie Taulton, in Coolidge.
She attended Dunbar High School in Mexia and also attended public schools in Dallas.

Doris was a member of Union Memorial United Methodist Church. She joined at an early age then became a member of St. Luke United Methodist, were she attended over 25 years. She worked several years in home health care, doing what she loved, caring for others.


Essie Lee Sanders Carter

Funeral services for Essie Lee Sanders Carter will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Greater Haynes Memorial, COGIC, 601 N. Denton St., in Mexia.

Minister Bettie Macklin will officiate, and the Rev. Claude Jackson will be the eulogist.

Family and friends may visit Mrs. Carter as she slumbers in sweet repose at Pearly Gates Funeral Home, 827 Hwy. 171, in Mexia, on Friday Dec. 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A wake service will follow 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, at Sardis P.B. Church, 600 E. Sumpter St. in Mexia.

Essie Carter passed away Dec. 15, 2013, at Baylor All Saints Hospital in Forth Worth, with her family present.

Essie Lee Sanders Carter was born to the parentage of Mr. Alex Sanders and Mrs. on March 2, 1913.

She received her formal education at Dunbar High School in Mexia. Mrs. Carter confessed a hope in Christ early in her teenage years while united with New Hope Baptist Church, in Tehuacana.


Johnnie O. Christian

Johnnie O. Christian, 79, of Mexia, passed away Dec. 16, 2013, at her home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, at First United Methodist Church, Mexia, with the Rev. Danny Niedecken officiating.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Brookside Memorial Park in Houston.

Visitation with the family will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home.

Johnnie was born Nov. 4, 1934, in Cleveland, to John Robert and Lula Bentley O’Conner.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mexia. She was also a member of the Mexia Garden Club, Woman’s Friday Club, Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, and Parkview Hospital Auxiliary.

Johnnie had a very outgoing personality, always cheerful and friendly.


Thelma Louise ‘Gran’ Hickson

Thelma Louise “Gran” Hickson, 93, formerly of Me­xia, passed away Dec. 13, 2013, in Azle. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 16, at Blair-Stubbs Cha­pel, with the Rev. James Boling officiating. Interment will follow in the Mexia Cemetery.

Louise was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Ennis, to Leonard M. and Ruth Trice Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clau­die D. Hickson; parents, Ruth Trice Anderson and Leonard Anderson; brother Milburn Anderson; and sisters Violet Anderson Wil­liams and Mary “Sissy” Hughes.


Fayma Henderson Hill

Fayma Henderson Hill passed away Dec. 10, 2013, in Mexia at the age of 83.

She was born Jan. 23, 1930, in Mexia, where she grew up, attending Mexia High School where she met the love of her life, John J. Hill, who preceded her in death in 1995. She has gone to join him in Heaven, forever together.

Fayma graduated from Mexia High School in the Class of 1947. She then attended The University of Texas, graduating in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She then went to Sul Ross State College, where she obtained her master’s in Education in 1957.

John and Fayma were married Dec. 23, 1951, in Mexia, and both were teachers and administrators in Odessa, Erie and Broomfield, Colo., Fayma continued her lifelong career in education in Longmont, Colo., at both Niwot and Longmont high schools, where she worked in the library and front office for 26 years prior to her retirement.


Larry LaRue

Larry LaRue, 60, of Me­xia, went home to Heaven on Dec. 9, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at Blair-Stubbs Chapel, with the Rev. Marcus Sheffield officiating.
Larry was born June 22, 1953, in Mexia, to Henry and Virginia LaRue.

He was a near lifelong resident of Mexia, graduating from Me­xia High School in 1972. Larry was a graduate of TSTC in Waco and a former school board member of Mexia ISD. Some of his favorite past times were team roping, bulldogging and fishing, as well as supporting the students and athletes of Mexia ISD.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Chrisner LaRue.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Cleshay LaRue; son Laramie LaRue; father Henry LaRue; sister Elaine Schulte and husband Bill, of Mexia; nephews Blaine, Bruce and Bill; niece Belinda; and great-nieces Brittany, Bethany and Brandie. He is also survived by a special son, Jose “Pepe” Contreras.


Ernest Busby

Ernest Busby died Dec. 7, 2013. He was born Feb. 16, 1927 in rural Rice, to Ples Busby, a Freestone County native, and Mae Bell Butler, a Wood County native. Ernest accepted Christ at an early age. He grew up in Rice and attended public schools there.

After graduation, Busby enlisted in the Air Force on Aug. 6, 1945. Ernest reenlisted in the Army Air Corps on Dec. 14, 1945 and shortly after, on Dec. 26, 1945, he married the love of his life, Mildred Lankford of Teague. Nine children were born to this union and their marriage was strong for 66 years until Mildred Busby’s death in 2012.
