Lois Mondell Helms

Lois Mondell Helms, 89, a long-time resident of Groesbeck, passed away April 18, 2013, in the Madisonville Care Center, inMadisonville. Born June 23, 1923, to William Robert Jutson and Mamie Martha Stockman Jutson, Mondell attended Groesbeck High School, graduating in 1939 at the age of 16. Two years later, she met David Helms, at that time in road construction, and the two were wed at the Groesbeck courthouse Oct 11, 1941. While David was serving in World War II, Mondell unofficially adopted her young cousin, Dolly, who became the couple’s child, along with Phyllis Mondell and Gala Dawn. Upon David’s return from the service, they opened Helms Lumber Company. Mondell’s passion was spending time with her children and grandchildren, traveling with her friends, and serving the community. She was Room Mother for both Phyllis’ class and Gala’s class from first through twelfth grades, band booster president and never missed an activity in which they participated.

Bonnie Jean Young

Bonnie Jean Young, 82, of Mexia, passed away April 18, 2013, at Providence Hospital in Waco. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, April 21, at 2 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Wright Sr. officiating. Visitation will be Saturday evening 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Bonnie was born April 14, 1931, in Leona, to Fred and Freda Foreman Merchant. She loved to make cakes, pies, cookies and fudge and loved her flowers, especially bluebonnets. Bonnie was loved greatly by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she loved them all tremendously. She touched the hearts of everyone she met and will be missed greatly by everyone that knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm McCreight, and son, Gary McCreight.

Nolan ‘Sonny’Henderson

Nolan “Sonny” Henderson, 85, went to be with the Lord on April 17, 2013. Funeral services were held Friday, April 19, at Blair-Stubbs Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Wright officiating. Interment was in the Mexia Cemetery. Sonny was born April 15, 1928, in Lost Prairie, to Carlie and Bessie Vest Henderson. He lived and worked in the Mexia area most of his life. Sonny married Juanita Morton on Feb. 1, 1946, in Groesbeck. He retired after combining 50 years of service as a warehouse supervisor from the Mexia Textile Mill and Hobbs Bonded Fibers. Sonny was devoted to his family and serving the Lord. Papaw, as he was also known, especially enjoyed spending time with his greatgrandson, J.D. He had a great sense of humor, outgoing personality, never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him. He was a longtime active member of the Northside Baptist Church in Mexia. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Esther Mae, Euna Faye and Clara Ann.
