The shell of the latest Greater Mexia Area Habitat for Humanity house is in place, and the organization held an open house Sunday to show well-wishers their progress. They also wanted to re-establish a tradition in Mexia of letting people write positive messages on the wooden studs of the homes before the sheetrock covers them.
Oscar Alvarez, the prospective owner of the house at 507 E. Titus was present at the open house and expressed enthusiasm for the project.
Alvarez said he has so far put in nearly 60 of the 200 hours of personal work required of those who buy Habitat for Humanity homes. Some of the work includes taking classes in how to be a successful homeowner.
Alvarez is a single father of a 4-year-old son and works at a local bank. He expressed appreciation for the messages and planned to read each one.
“The ones I’ve read, I really like a lot,” he said.
Alvarez applied for the home in September 2016 and eventually was told he had been selected.
