Mexia couple in Vegas during mass shooting

Mexia’s Dr. Charlotte Kimmel and her husband, Dr. Andrew Griffin arrived in Las Vegas this past Sunday, Oct. 1, just hours before the biggest mass shooting in U.S. history. Fortunately they escaped injury themselves.
“We were just off the strip at the Rio Casino, and we had just been to see Penn & Teller, the magicians,” Kimmel said Tuesday. She and Griffin had just gotten out of the show and were waiting for a cab, intending to go to the Strip.
“As we’re standing there,” she continued, “the people in front of us had their iPhones out and they said, ‘Oh, my God, there’s been a shooting in downtown Vegas at the Strip.’ So I started to try to look for it, and they kept talking about, ‘it’s really bad,’ etcetera.”
At that point, Kimmel said a young couple arrived from the Strip.
“They said it was total chaos, and the police were trying to shut everything down,” she said. “They couldn’t get out and they finally had to walk away from the area where the shooting was. They got a cab and I don’t know why they came over to the Rio, but they got out.”
Kimmel and Griffin changed their plans and decided to return to the Golden Nugget, where they were staying, which was some distance from where the shooting had occurred.
