The Wortham Lady Bulldogs are four matches away from making a clean sweep of the competition in District 14-2A after crushing the Riesel Lady Indians in three sets Tuesday afternoon, 25-8, 25-8, 25-3, to move to 12-0.
The win also marks the 14th consecutive sweep for the Lady Bulldogs, which translates into 52 straight sets without a loss.
Wortham was without the services of Ashley Mao, who was out with a stomach virus, thus forcing coach DeAnna Whaley to move up Jessica Black from the junior varsity to the varsity for the match. Black has been no stranger to pitching in and helping the varsity team throughout the season and played a big part in Tuesday’s win with 10 aces, three kills and a dig.
Kayla Lansford led the team with 10 kills, four aces, two digs and a blocked shot and setter Jayde Hamilton recorded 10 assists, six aces, three digs and two kills.
Stepping up with big contributions were Skylar Phillips, who finished the match with six kills and four assists, and Rylee Goolsby with four kills and a dig.
Setter Darcy Taylor ended the match with four assists, four aces and a dig, while Samantha Wright smashed over four kill shots.
Wortham’s defense was led by libero Hallie Fautt, finishing with three digs and two assists and defensive specialist, Megan Whaley, had six digs.
Wortham was scheduled to play Penelope at home on Friday.
