The final district match of the season for the Mexia Ladycats was a handful, but the crimson and black maintained control to sweep the Athens Lady Hornets on the road Tuesday night in three sets, 25-8, 25-17, 25-21, to finish district play with a record of 6-2 and the No. 2 seed heading into the playoffs next week.
Mexia cruised to a first set win, thanks in part to an opening 8-0 run with Baileah Thompson serving, along with a nice kill shot by Camrye Smith and a block by Jocelyn Anderson. Heaven Porch led the net brigade with three kills in the set, with both Thompson and Anderson picking up a kill each.
Athens took an early 4-6 lead in the second set before succumbing to hitting errors that allowed the Lady cats to tie the game and eventually take the lead. Mexia went on to outscore the Lady Hornets 13-3, with Keiana Keith leading the way with a pair of kills and Porch serving up three points, including an ace. Smith, Tiesha Jones and Anderson all contributed at the net with kills.
