Tuesday evening’s Class 1A regional quarterfinal volleyball match between the Coolidge Lady Yellowjackets and the Barlett Lady Bulldogs, was not for the faint of heart.
Coolidge ended up with the five-set win, 25-23, 26-28, 25-19, 22-25, 15-3, to advance to the semifinals of this weekend’s regional tournament in San Angelo.
The Lady Yellowjackets won the first set by two and had momentum going into the second set. With the score tied at 12-12, Coolidge went on a 9-1 run and seemed to have control at that point. But the Lady Bulldogs kept chipping away and tied the set at 24-24. A short time later, with the scored tied again at 26-26, Barlett scored the final two points to tie the set at 1-1.
In the third, the Lady Yellowjackets dominated early. Tionna Kirven started the set with a thunderous kill to give Coolidge a 1-0 lead, then libero Sofia Ortiz served up the next eight points, getting help from Kirven in the process as she delivered four more kills and a blocked shot as the Lady Yellowjackets led 9-0.
