It was an exciting weekend for the Coolidge Yellowjackets, as they start the 2017-18 basketball season not only with a 3-0 record, but a championship trophy after winning the Thrall Tournament.
Coolidge opened play in the tournament Thursday with a 57-34 win over Class 3A Lago Vista, followed by a 60-51 defeat of Class 4A’s Llano Yellowjackets on Friday.
Coolidge faced the Fighting Owls of Anderson-Shiro in the championship game Saturday night, defeating another Class 3A opponent for the crown, 52-45.
The Yellowjackets trailed the Fighting Owls after the first period of play in the tournament finale, 12-8, but cut the deficit down to one at the half, 23-22.
Coolidge exploded for 17 points in the third period as Jordan Brown connected on a pair of treys, Torrey Hoover tossing in seven points - including a three-pointer - and Roman Benjamin sinking two buckets to help push the Yellowjackets into the lead at the close of the quarter, 39-35.
