Depending on which poll you look at, Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) or the Texas Girls Coaches Association, the Teague Lady Lions came in ranked No. 1 by one poll and No. 2 by the other in Class 3A. Yet, the final result in Tuesday night’s non-district game played at Blackcat Gym, finished with the Mexia Ladycats upsetting the top ranked Lady Lions, 51-47.
Mexia trailed at the half 25-21, but three pointers by Keiana Keith and Treece Daily (2), helped the Ladycats tie the game at 30-30 mid-way through the third period.
With the score tied at 32-32 a shot time later, Camrye Smith’s turn-around jumper in the lane gave Mexia a two-point edge at 34-32.
Smith scored again after a Teague turnover to put Mexia up by four with 2:02 left in the period. The crimson and black outscored the Lady Lions the rest of the quarter, 5-3, on a trey by DeModesty Williams and a basket by Jenny Williams, with an assist by Tiesha Jones to give Mexia a 41-35 advantage heading into the fourth period.
